Main purpose of job
Reporting to the Head of Safety Biomass Technology RWE Generation, working at Various sites, but mainly Markinch Glenrothes Scotland, including the Off Site Fuel Processing Facilities. The post is to support the sites in the overall safety management within Generation Safety. The applicant will provide a flexible and responsive safety resource to support RWE Generation.
The applicant will also, from time to time, support safety activities and initiatives across the Generation Business and also play a part in the maintenance of the Central Safety Management systems and associated local documentation. The post holder will be pivotal in developing the safety culture (inclusive of the RWE Mission Zero project) at the sites such that engaging conversations are a natural way of life and people become behaviour driven rather than task driven. This will involve significant interaction with the incumbent workforce out on plant and in the office environment.
Principal accountabilities
Provision of Specialist Safety Advice and Mentorship and practical support to the site management teams, their staff and resident contractors where appropriate that are engaged in plant outages and major maintenance activities under the CDM regulations.
Provide additional practical safety support to the day to day operations at the sites.
Support and help develop the Mission Zero project.
Encourage and develop a behavioural safety approach to improve the overall safety awareness within the staff and management team, encouraging safety discussions at all levels of the organisation and assist the EOTB Ambassadors on site.
Support the production of a local Safety Improvement Plans (SIP) &/or Road map which reflect the overall objectives of Generation SE and the Biomass business, supervising and reporting on progress at the relevant forums within the business. Provide expertise in accident / incident investigation in support of the line management teams undertaking the investigations.
Communicate causes and lessons learnt to colleagues across the Generation SE business via corporate safety.
Close liaison with the Head of Safety Biomass Technology and other Generation UK & Central Safety fraternity to ensure coordinated safety management approach across the business.
Encourage / support tool box talks, work place inspections, hazards observation and near miss reporting at the business units, driving Incident Reporting System entries to a timely and accurate conclusion.
Champion the continuous improvement ethos of the Health & Safety Management.
Key performance indicators
Provision of safety advice and mentorship - ensuring Management teams are aligned with their H & S obligations, including carrying out safety walks and engaging conversations.
Visibility and engagement with staff at all levels of the organisation .
Continuous Safety Improvement within the sites Business Units measured by leading and reactive measures.
Promotion of Behavioural Safety, particularly the Leadership & Employee Safety Behaviour Frame work.
Safety understanding and active engagement in safety by all staff at the sites, personally assisting and mentoring the location staff and particularly EOTB Ambassadors.
Compliance Documentation to reflect current legislative and regulatory mentorship and corporate safety timescales.
Problem solving
Investigations of accidents and incidents, identification of the root cause, recommendation and implementation of measures.
Understanding of H & S legislation and impact on business unit.
Knowledge and skills
NEBOSH Certificate in occupational Health and Safety eventually leading to NEBOSH Diploma.
Clear understanding of the CDM regs and application in the management of plant outages and major maintenance activities.
Investigative skills, for example Root Cause Analysis and HEART Communication skills and ability to interact with people at all levels of the organisation and external agencies.
Sound understanding of current health and safety legislation applicable to the power generation industry and be able to apply it in the current workplace.
The ability to work to deadlines and produce high quality work in an empowered environment. Ability to deliver presentations to staff and contractors at all levels of organisation.
Willingness to travel both in UK and Europe
