Job description    2021-02-23

ECAT Clinical Lectureships/ECAT PhD Fellowships
ACN2 (£35,958 - £53,280)
College of Medicine & Veterinary Medicine
Fixed term, full-time (40 hours per week)
1 August 2021 – CCT date + 6 months
Up to 5 posts available We are seeking to appoint a further cohort of highly ambitious individuals who aspire to become the next generation of clinical academic leaders. Vacancies are available within the ECAT (Edinburgh Clinical Academic Track) programme for trainees seeking doctoral (PhD) training and mentorship. All vacancies are open to medically qualified trainees in any clinical discipline from anywhere in the UK . All candidates must demonstrate a commitment to a research career and should have a track record appropriate to their career stage in basic, translational or clinical research. The Opportunity:

With funding from Wellcome Trust, and in collaboration with NHS Education for Scotland (NES) and Lothian NHS Trust, the ECAT programme has up to five posts available for the 2021 intake. Since its inception in 2008, ECAT has recruited 70 medical trainees from across the UK, representing over 20 clinical disciplines, who have pursued diverse fields of PhD training and been highly successful in postdoctoral career progression. All posts provide funding for a full-time, three-year Wellcome Trust PhD for Clinicians in one of the University of Edinburgh’s internationally competitive, multidisciplinary research centres. In order to maximise flexibility for individual trainees, two types of post are available: ECAT Clinical Lectureships (with combined clinical training; Wellcome Trust PhD for Clinicians; and mentorship to CCT) and ECAT PhD Fellowships (with Wellcome Trust PhD for Clinicians and mentorship). In both cases, funding is provided for a preparatory period (one year for the former, three months for the latter) before beginning the three-year PhD project, when selection of supervisors and planning of the PhD project are optimised with the support of the ECAT directors. Your skills and attributes for success: Candidates for ECAT Clinical Lectureships must hold or obtain (no later than August 2021) a specialty training position with a National Training Number (NTN) in their chosen discipline in the UK. Candidates for ECAT PhD Fellowships do not need a specialty training position with a National Training Number (NTN). Candidates for all posts must be GMC registered. Candidates for ECAT Clinical Lectureships will typically be in the early years of specialty training at the time of application, but consideration will be given to those at more advanced stages of training (eg ST4 or early years of SpR training) who are committed to an academic career. Applications are welcome from trainees in ALL medical and surgical specialties (with the exception of GP trainees) and from ALL regions of the UK. All applicants must be eligible for higher specialist clinical training. Non-EU citizens are welcome to apply, however you must be eligible for a Tier 2 visa. Further information is available on the University’s HR pages: http://www.ed.ac.uk/human-resources/recruitment/eligibility-immigration/employees-guidance/working-in-uk/points-based/tier2 Please be aware, however, that the programme will only cover the cost of home/EU postgraduate tuition fees. Candidates need not specify for which post they are applying, but can indicate a preference at the time of interview. Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) check required.
Please provide a CV and supporting statement (330 words) with your application. As a valued member of our team you can expect: An exciting, positive, creative, challenging and rewarding place to work. We give you support, nurture your talent and reward success. You will benefit from a competitive reward package and a wide range of staff benefits, which includes a generous holiday entitlement, a defined benefits pension scheme , staff discounts, family friendly initiatives , flexible working and much more. Access our staff benefits page for further information and use our reward calculator to find out the total value of pay and benefits provided.

The University of Edinburgh holds a Silver Athena SWAN award in recognition of our commitment to advance gender equality in higher education. If invited for interview you will be required to evidence your right to work in the UK. Further information is available on our right to work webpages. The University is able to sponsor the employment of international workers in this role. If successful, an international applicant requiring sponsorship to work in the UK will need to satisfy the UK Home Office’s English Language requirements and apply for and secure a Tier 2/Skilled Worker Visa. Closing date 22 March 2021.
As a world-leading research-intensive University, we are here to address tomorrow’s greatest challenges. Between now and 2030 we will do that with a values-led approach to teaching, research and innovation, and through the strength of our relationships, both locally and globally.
The College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine The College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine traces its origins back nearly 500 years (Darwin, Simpson and Conan-Doyle were students here) and is internationally renowned for its research and teaching. Professor Moira Whyte is the Head of College, the only conjoint Medical and Veterinary Medical School in the UK. The College employs over 3000 academic and support staff. The College has two Schools, the Edinburgh Medical School comprising 3 Deaneries; Biomedical Sciences; Molecular Genetic and Population Health Sciences and Clinical Sciences and the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies.

The undergraduate medicine teaching programme in the College enjoys a high reputation nationally and internationally, with over 1,300 students enrolled on the MBChB and Intercalated courses and nearly 1000 on the Veterinary Sciences BVS and related programmes. In addition, approximately 2000 students are currently enrolled in the College’s taught and research post-graduate courses, including an extensive range of online distance learning diplomas and degrees. They are trained by over 1000 outstanding academic staff.

The academic disciplines within Medicine are largely concentrated in the two teaching hospital campuses, the Royal Infirmary at Little France and the Western General Hospital. Both have extensive new infrastructure with major research institutes and state of the art research facilities on clinical sites. Edinburgh hosts a number of prestigious MRC and BHF Research Centres. The approach is interdisciplinary, with basic and clinical researchers working together at the laboratory bench and in our clinical research facilities to address major themes in basic, clinical and translational medicine. The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies on the Easter Bush Campus houses outstanding teaching and clinical facilities as well as the splendid Roslin Institute, one of the world’s leading veterinary research centres. The College offers outstanding opportunities to address ‘One Health’ and Global Health problems of the highest international priority.

The College’s reputation as one of the world’s leading centres of medical and veterinary medical research has been reaffirmed by its UK REF2014 results. Medicine, the University’s largest submission, was ranked in the top 5 in the UK. Veterinary Medicine came 1st in the UK, and retained its position as the UK’s top Vet School. It made a joint submission with Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC). Neuroscience was ranked 3rd in the UK out of 82 submissions, representing a major advance. Overall, 84% of the College’s research activity was rated world leading or internationally excellent (3* and 4*). In terms of 'one medicine' research (human and animal medicine), the University of Edinburgh's research power (quality x volume) is the strongest in the UK.
