As a Senior User Researcher, you will be responsible for working on a variety of different high profile projects and programme supporting the 2023 revaluation of commercial property, development of new digitals for commercial and domestic property taxation regimes and supporting our policy teams in delivering agile user-centred policy.

You’ll work with an experienced multidisciplinary team, led by a digital product manager.
ResponsibilitiesLead and complete user research for complex and high profile projects, programmes and/or portfolios of work (e.g., Making Tax Digital for Business, etc.) Plan, design and prepare a range of user research activities to support the design, development and continuous improvement of complex government services Carry out a wide range of user research activities from recruiting participants, preparing discussion guides and moderating research sessions Lead colleagues to analyse research data and synthesise clear and actionable findings, including working closely with analytics colleagues to create a rich picture of user behaviour Communicate user research findings to help the team and wider organisation develop a deep understanding of users and their needs Work closely with product managers, designers and developers to turn user research findings into stories and actions that lead to valuable product and service features Align user research activities with wider plans to inform service proposition Build user centred practices in new and larger teams Assess services to ensure they meet the Service Standard Mentor and guide more junior user researchers to assure and improve research practice Lead, coach, motivate, develop and appraise a multi-disciplined team of people and foster an inclusive, collaborative team culture Contribute to the wider user research community including presenting at meetups, writing blog posts and leading on aspects of practice Planning, designing, preparing and executing a range of user research activities to support the design, development and continuous improvement of government services
Essential criteria:

The ability to understand the complex problems a team is trying to solve and align user research activities to inform decision making and action Experience of helping teams adopt a wide range of user research methods, analysis and synthesis techniques and approaches to presenting and sharing findings Experience in using a range of quantitative and qualitative methodologies including ethnographic techniques, usability testing, remote testing, and survey design Experience in meeting ambitious deadlines and delivering high-quality work on schedule, including quickly turning around research plans and outputs in different formats Experience of introducing new user research methods into a team, and guiding colleagues in the choice and effective application of research methods The ability to include all kinds of users in appropriate research activities, to help teams understand the diversity of users of government services
Desirable criteria:

A good understanding of the social and technological context for government services, and experience of aligning user research activities to help teams understand changing user behaviour Excellent communication, presentation and interpersonal skills; the ability to communicate complex concepts clearly and persuasively across different audiences and varying levels of the organisation Strong qualitative and analytical skills, excellent attention to detail and good business judgement Enthusiasm for coaching and mentoring of team members

Applicants should note that the starting salary for those who are offered a position is the salary scale minimum (£51,050) for this grade.

When lockdown restrictions ease, some regular travel to our VOACG Strategic Locations of Worthing, Bristol, Edinburgh & Manchester alongside other VOA & HMRC sites will be required. Office visits could be for the day or require overnight stays depending on the demands of the business.

This will be on an ad hoc basis to be defined by you in the role and agreed with your line manager.
