Job description 2021-02-23
We are seeking to appoint a Researcher to work on the project ‘Arboles: trait-based understanding of Latin American forest biodiversity and resilience’ funded by the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). In the Arboles project we look to gain a better understanding on how forest ecosystems in Latin America have responded to a changing environment. For this position the researcher will investigate the linkages between plot-level vegetation distribution and abundance, functional trait composition and spectral reflectance based on very high spatial and spectral resolution UAV data in South American tropical and temperate forests. The end goal is to gain a better understanding in mapping plot level plant functional composition. Duties include plot level vegetation census data cleaning and matching to individual level plant functional traits, UAV spectral data processing so as to obtain final gridded products at the plot level and conducting statistical analysis focusing on the relationship between tree individuals distributions and their functional traits to vegetation structure and spectral reflectance. You will work in a research team together with contributing to the field of plant functional trait ecology and remote sensing by publishing high impact research articles and present at international conferences and seminars. You will hold, or be close to completion of a PhD in ecology, plant sciences, remote sensing, forestry or other discipline relevant to the project, have skills in quantitative analysis of ecological data and remote sensing and a strong interest in plant functional ecology. Experience of working with spatial datasets and R statistical environment is highly desired. A track record of peer-reviewed publications in relevant topics is essential. The appointment will be until 31 January 2022, potentially extendable to 14 months subject to funding. Ideally starting soon after 1 April 2021. Applications are particularly welcome from candidates who identify as female or BAME, who are under-represented in academic posts in Oxford. SoGE is committed to equality and values diversity. Applications for this vacancy are to be made online. You will be required to upload a CV and supporting statement as part of your online application. The closing date for applications is 12.00 noon Monday 22 March 2021, and interviews will be held in early April 2021.
