Job description    2021-02-23

The University of Southampton has recently been awarded an EU H2020 Marie Sklodowska Curie ITN award linking a multidisciplinary consortium of researchers, industry and patient associations in Europe. The project aims to deepen our understanding of the MHC class I antigen processing and presentation pathway, understanding the function of key aspects of the pathway, their role in disease and potential for therapeutic intervention. The CAPSTONE European training network offers 2 positions to join the laboratory of Professor Edd James, who has an ongoing programme of research into the mechanism and significance of antigen processing and presentation, with an interdisciplinary research group of scientists. His research encompasses atom-level understanding of antigen processing through to preclinical modelling of anti-cancer immunity and understanding human disease. The projects will focus on understanding how altering the antigen processing and presentation pathway is able to affect the immune response, in particular to reduce immunogenicity in autoimmune disease or increase immunogenicity in cancer. To be successful you will have a BSc or MSc or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in a range of immune response based approaches. The candidates will be expected to travel and undertake at least one planned secondment at the laboratories of other members of the consortium to generate new reagents and/or learn new techniques. Only candidates complying with the Early Stage Researcher requirements: At the time of recruitment (i.e. first date of employment), you must not have resided or carried out your main activity (work, studies, etc…) in the UK for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to recruitment under this project. Compulsory national service and/or short stays such as holidays are not taken into account. At the time of recruitment you must not yet have been awarded your doctorate and must be in the first 4 years (full-time equivalent) of your research career.
